Thompson, Kerouac, Salinger group. I have to say, after reading what is considered to be neo-classic "canon" I'm PISSED that we're listening to a bunch of mid-century privileged white guys whining and having mental breakdowns in rebellion against the world their fathers have created and then going around and acting like a bunch of morons. Seriously, if you hate the society that stupid white guys have made, maybe do something different? I don't know, maybe let a few black guys share a table with you or don't cheat on or beat the flurry of women you entertain... try to change something up. But nope! It's more whining and acting like douches, which - in my humble opinion - has only continued to today in bands like Nickelback (uggghh) and Disturbed. While these morons think they're being original and revolutionary in their "rebellion" what they're ulitmately doing is tying up the "canon" line so people with real talents and real struggles can't get in to be heard. ::sigh:: Sorry to get all tirade-y there. It's just kind of depressing when, my whole life I've heard about these writers who were really shaking things up only to find that they're just the same bunch of angry white dudes we have dominating crap music, only with different lingo and purer drugs. Fear and Loathing On the campaign trail 72 is a prime example. He's vulgar and a little bit racist and dumps mcgovern halfway through the campaign, and I just keep reading him. he cheated on his wife like i eat pop-tarts, but he abandoned hell's angels b/c he saw two of them hitting a woman while in the middle of a three way with her. it's like don draper from mad men. Bad bad bad, but somehow those tiny little good bits make his drug habits and carelessness with others almost charming? apparently, yes. I know what you mean re: HST. I think he's way cooler than Hunter S. Thompson, more as the dude who was sober through all this craziness and running around with these guys, rather than the asshole-in-spotlight. I'd recommend 'The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test' if you've not read it. SO amazing. And gives some great insight into what Ken Kesey & the Pranksters were trying to say about society (and how that stuff's still rippling out now). Also: grandmas are awesome.
